Could Newquay boldly go where no town has gone before?

An official plan is expected to be announced for the UK's first space port on Wednesday - and it could be right here in Cornwall.

We are expecting details in the Queen's Speech, setting out what the government is going to do this year.

Newquay Airport is one of just a handful of places that could blast tourists into orbit.

A commercial spaceport could be worth £150m and would send travellers to the very edge of space, as well as launching satellites.

But there are some doubts over the viability of it - and whether enough people would be willing to pay.

Newquay is the only site in England to have made a shortlist with the others at RAF Kinloss on the Moray Firth, Glasgow Prestwick, Stornaway on the Isle of Lewis and Llanbedr in Wales.

The announcement will come as part of the Modern Transport Bill, which will also pave the way for the first driverless cars to take to the roads.

Jonathon Start is from Newquay Business Improvement District said: "Obviously it's a big if at this point but it would be a massive boost for Newquay and the surrounding area.

"Newquay is on the up at the moment with lots of inward investment at the Aerohub and to have a spaceport there would be a fantastic achievement for Newquay and the surrounding area - and Cornwall as well.

"I think it would have a huge effect on encouraging businesses to come and invest in Newquay and the surrounding area - and tourism as well."

A spokesperson for the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership said: "We are expecting the Queen's Speech on Wednesday to reaffirm the Government's commitment to establishing the UK's first commercial Spaceport by 2020 as part of a new Transport Bill. We believe there are compelling reasons why Cornwall Airport Newquay could be suitable for the Spaceport including the length of runway, uncongested airspace and its location near the sea, but we are not aware that any decisions have been taken and we are awaiting further guidance from Government about the selection process."
