Do you want to see armed police patrolling beaches in Cornwall?

New figures show a third of holidaymakers in the South West want to see extra security at the seaside when abroad.

Half would even pay more for it but others say it would put them off going.

It is after reports of soldiers manning some beaches in France.

Pirate FM asked people at Towan beach in Newquay what they thought.

One woman said: "Maybe somewhere like Greece, Tunisia or Turkey, but then again you'd sort of expect it there. I don't think people would give it a second thought here, why would they? It's not like we're in a zone where it is going to happen really.

One person on holiday in the Duchy said: "I would rather not have armed police on the beach, I feel more relaxed without them.

Another man said: "Yeah I think it is important that there is some form of security depending on what country you go to however, it all depends on where yo go. There are a few incidents out there but generally Cornwall is quite a safe place."

The research, carried out on behalf of Travelzoo by Atomik on 29th July 2016, surveyed 1801 British adults who were planning a 2016 summer holiday.

The figures for the south west were as follows:

  • Half (47%) would be prepared to pay at least 5% more for their holidays if it meant there was extra security.
  • A fifth (21%) saying they'd pay as much as 10 or 15%+ more.
  • A third (33%) say police with guns patrolling beaches abroad would make them feel safer.
  • 15% say armed police on beaches would put them off going there, and 26% admit it would make them more nervous.
  • A quarter (24%) believe it's impossible to stop attacks from happening and these measures are ineffective
  • 1 in 10 (10%) South West Holidaymakers believe any kind of extra security measure will have a negative impact on their holiday this year.

When it comes to popular destinations, the latest research shows Spain is top, although the US has now jumped to joint second, alongside France, which is still proving to be a very popular summer holiday destination for the Brits:

  • Spain (14%)
  • France (6%)
  • USA (6%)
  • Greece (5%)
  • Italy (4%)
  • Australia (3%)
  • Germany (3%)
  • Portugal (3%)
