VIDEO: Is There A LION Loose In Cornwall?

Days after a lynx was recaptured on Dartmoor - now it's claimed a lion is on the loose in Cornwall.

A driver has reported seeing a big cat between Nanpean and Whitemoor near St Austell.

He told how a big cat leapt onto the road in front of him.

Police were scrambled - and say markings could be seen where something had crossed near a clay pit.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: ''It was described as a female lion walking in front of a lorry.

"Officers went and spoke to the driver who had seen it.

"There were marks where the animal crossed. There have been reports of a similar nature over the years. There was no sighting of the animal by officers.

"It is not thought to be a danger to members of the public or workers.

"t was reported in good faith and investigated. Officers did not need any extra resources and if we had seen a lion on the loose we would have called in experts.

"The call was taken seriously enough for us to go and attend."

There have been a string of big cat sightings in Cornwall over the years - check whether there has been one near you here.

China clay company Imerys told The Mirror it was called by the driver, who was not one of its employees, to report the sighting.

A spokesperson said: "The driver was not one of our employees but was working in the area at the time.

"He called us to report that he had seen something and we did what we would be expected to do in this situation, which is to call the police.

"He reported seeing a big cat crossing the road in front of him. But this was the only incident that has been reported to us and that is really were our involvement ended.

"The police attended and then picked things up from there."

A caller to Pirate FM has told how a decapitated baby deer was found near the alleged sighting days later.

The sighting comes just days after a lynx was recaptured after three weeks on the loose on Dartmoor.

Flaviu had burrowed his way out of his enclosure at Dartmoor Zoo. The zoo has been quick to respond to the latest sighting, tweeting: "Just before anyone asks - not one of ours."
