PHOTOS: Boat Fire Cordons Off Cornish Beach

Pirate FM understands a Cornish beach had to be cordoned off after a boat caught fire close to the shore.

Fire crews from St Austell and Mevagissey were scrambled to Pentewan Bay on Thursday afternoon.

Coastguards and an RNLI lifeboat were also on the scene just after lunchtime, following a string of 999 calls.

A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency confirmed one person made it to shore safely.

They said: "Shortly after 12pm today (Thursday 1st September) UK Coastguard received multiple 999 calls from members of the public reporting that a speedboat caught fire approximately 75 yards from the shore near Pentewan Sands, Cornwall."

They added: "Fowey RNLI all-weather lifeboat was launched while the Mevagissy and St Austell Coastguard Rescue Teams cordoned off the shore to keep people at a safe distance. The fire service were also called to the scene.

"One adult was on board but is now safely ashore.

"The fire has been left to burn out while emergency services monitor the situation."

A spokesperson from Cornwall Fire and Rescue said: "At 13:05hrs the Critical Control Centre received a call from the Coastguard stating that a speedboat was on fire on the beach at Pentewan.

"Appliances from Mevagissey and St Austell attended the incident.

"The speedboat was totally destroyed by the fire and was left to burn out under the supervision of the Coastguard.

"These are all the details available for this incident."
