This was the scene at Trewirgie Juniors in Redruth, which is one of three schools spending the day clearing up flood damage.

Site Manager Bill Simpson said: "We had last night, I've never seen in this area, a flash flood that absolutely went through the school. We had three or four inches of water along the corridors, all the drains were out of control and there was two foot of water in our play yard.

"It was just the amount of rain that we actually had. I live up the top of town and I was coming down - the rain was coming down the roads like a river. All the drains - nothing was coping. It was shooting six foot in the air out of the drains."

Redruth school will re-open as usual on Thursday.

Headteacher Craig Martin said: "After yesterday's freak weather storm, we have completed all the necessary safety checks and every one of our committed staff have helped get the school facilities ready once again.

"Redruth School will be open as normal to all students tomorrow, Thursday 15th September."
