Hundreds of hens have been saved from the slaughter in Cornwall thanks to Pirate FM listeners.

The Camelford birds needed to find new homes by Tuesday.

The British Hen Welfare Trust says its appeal sparked a rush of calls.

300 were found new homes.

Spokeswoman Fran told Pirate FM: "We generally find that when we put appeals out like this, people are amazingly warm to the charity and people to really respond to us and they'll come forward. Generally, we rehome every hen that we have to rehome.

"We'd always like to rehome more but we're never going to be able to save all the hens that there are out there. There are sixteen million laying hens in the UK and we rehome far less than one percent of those.

"We just think we have to do what we can and these hens make amazing pets."

It comes after 600 were saved from the same fate back in February.

Gaynor Davies from the British Hen Welfare Trust said: "They basically are just cats and dogs with feathers, they are really friendly and it is good for children to be able to see where their food is coming from as well."
