A St Austell schoolboy born with half a heart has received almost 70 birthday cards after his mum's appeal went viral.

Leanne Richards posted a request to friends and family on Facebook, asking them to send him a card for his big day.

It was in a bid to cheer up the soon-to-be nine-year-old after a tough year.

Leanne says she just wanted to put a smile on her son's face.

Now complete strangers have been getting in touch ahead of his birthday on New Year's Day.

She said: "He really enjoyed the limelight and getting cards every day, we have had some messages on Facebook and some letters, he even got a postcard from someone on holiday.

"He is overjoyed with it, so it is a nice thing to do and we are very grateful to the people who have sent them.

"This last year has been quite bad on him, he has missed quite a bit of school and lots of things children his age do that he can't do, so things like day-to-day problems with him breathing, he gets short of breath so can't join in with a lot of thigs, he gets very tired and I think he gets quite frustrated that he misses lots of school."

In her Facebook post, Leanne said: "As many of my friends and family know Daniel was born with only half a heart, his condition is called Hypoplastic left heart syndrome which is a life limited condition.

"Daniel will be nine years old on New Year's Day.

"Daniel loves it when the postman comes, he goes to the door to see if there are any for him but apart from hospital post he doesn't get any.

"So I am asking for my family and friends to send him a birthday card to put a big much needed smile on his face for his birthday.

"This would make his day. Thank you for reading my long post. Daniel's address is 7 JUNIPER WAY, ST AUSTELL, CORNWALL, PL25 3JT."
