Teenagers Spotted Climbing The Tamar Bridge

Saltash police are combing through CCTV after teenagers were spotted climbing the Tamar Bridge.

They reportedly scaled a safety fence and set off a fire extinguisher on Friday night.

There are claims it could have been a prank after a night out.

Officers have branded what happened, at around midnight, as "unbelievably stupid".

It is understood to have involved a group of around half a dozen teenagers, but no-one is believed to be hurt.

Saltash PCSO, Kirsty Down, told BBC Spotlight: "I have seen a lot of incidents on this bridge and what was going through my mind is how do you knock on a parent's door to tell them that their teenager has made a drunken mistake, a little bit of a joke that's gone too far, and has then taken their life by falling from the bridge".

A spokesperson for the Tamar Crossing told the Plymouth Herald details of the incident were "confidential".

According to the paper, the spokesperson said a lot of measures were taken to stop incidents like this happening on the bridge and called it "extremely rare".
