UPDATE: Body found on popular Cornish beach

A body has been discovered on a beach near Newquay, but police say they are not treating the death as suspicious.

Police and coastguard teams got the shout to Watergate Bay on Wednesday lunchtime.

Officials say they are waiting for the results of a post mortem but the man has not been formally identified.

Locals have told Pirate FM there were a few people on the beach when the emergency services arrived.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: "A body was discovered just after 1.40pm on Wednesday 15th March, on Watergate Bay Beach, Newquay.

"Police and the Coastguard are currently at the scene.

"The man has yet to have been formally identified.

"Police are not treating this death as suspicious and are awaiting the outcome of the post mortem".

Sarah Clarke was there when the emergency services arrived.

She told Pirate FM: "I was walking along the beach with the dogs and there just happened to be the police there and the coastguard there with a stretcher.

"There were police and coastguard at the scene and I heard them say an ambulance would be arriving soon too.

"There were a few people on the beach at the time".
