Firefighters have been battling a blaze that ripped through a house in Newquay.

Crews from the town were scrambled to Whitegate Road in the early hours of Friday.

They called in back-up from Perranporth and St Columb, along with the aerial ladder from Newquay.

Teams wearing breathing kit used jets to douse the flames, and say the house was empty at the time.

Western Power were also called to the scene, to shut off the electricity.

Station officer Stuart Whitworth said: "Members of the public had noticed the fire. When we arrived, the fire appeared to be on the first floor but was actually going through the roof so a very well developed fire".

A spokesperson from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "On receipt of this call, two fire appliances from Newquay and whole time officer were mobilised.

"Upon arrival a "Make Pumps 3" request was received and Critical Control mobilised an additional fire appliance from Perranporth.

"Shortly after this a further request for an Arial Ladder Platform (ALP) was made and Newquay's appliance was mobilised.

"A total of four breathing apparatus, one main jet, one covering jet and the ALP have been used to extinguish the fire.

"Western Power are also requested to isolate the electricity supply to the building".

Just after 5.30am, Cornwall Fire and Rescue said crews from Perranporth had left the scene and the remaining firefighters were putting out hotspots.

Stuart Whitworth added: "We're doing a fire investigation at the moment. There's extensive damage to the first floor. Structurally, I think the ground floor is not too bad but the whole roof space has gone".
