Pregnant woman trapped by the tide in Newquay

A pregnant woman who got trapped by the rising tide in Cornwall has been rescued after her husband swam for help.

Newquay lifeboat volunteers got the call to steep cliffs near the Barrowfields on Saturday evening.

Her husband had swam out of the cove and around to the north east side of Tolcarne Beach to raise the alarm.

Crews had to use emergency oars to gauge the depth of water and avoid submerged rocks as they made their way to help.

The town's Coastguard rescue team was also scrambled and the woman and a surfer who had tried to help were back on the beach just before 9.30pm.

A spokesperson for Newquay Lifeboat said: "The couple were visiting Newquay from Stoke-on-Trent and were very grateful for the lifeboat crew's assistance.

"Please remember to check local tide times before walking the coast, and bear in mind that is possible to be trapped around two-to-three hours before high tide, as happened on Saturday".
