Firefighters from across west Cornwall have battled a blaze at an empty farm house.

Crews from Penzance called in back-up from St Just, Hayle and Helston, amid reports of people inside.

They swept the building at Alverton on Sunday afternoon, but we are told everyone was safe.

Officials from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service carried out an investigation and say it started by accident.

A spokesperson said: "At 12:57pm a call was received to a fire in an unoccupied farm house.

"Two crews from Penzance were mobilised to the scene, on crews arrival they made the incident 'Persons reported' and also requested the attendance of further fire appliances and a water carrier.

"A total of 25 fire service staff attended on fire appliances from Penzance, St Just, Hayle and a Water Carrier from Helston.

"The two storey domestic property measured 15 x 20 metres and crews entered the building initially wearing two breathing apparatus using one hose reel jet and also a safety jet.

"Firefighters located the fire underneath a staircase in the centre of the building. Western Power engineers were requested to attend the property to isolate the power supply.

"Using four breathing apparatus, teams searched the first and ground floor of the building and confirmed 'all persons accounted for'.

"At 14:17pm, crews confirmed that the fire had been extinguished and after a fire investigation was confirmed as having started accidentally".
