Fatal crash sparks calls for A38 safety work

A fatal crash has sparked fresh calls for safety work on one of Cornwall's busiest roads.

It is a week since three lost their lives in a pile-up on the A38 at Landrake.

A man from Plymouth, a 32-year-old mum from Saltash and her six-year-old son died the Sunday morning before last.

Laura Hopes' younger son, who is just four-years-old, was airlifted to Bristol Children's Hospital with potentially serious head injuries.

The road was shut for hours while investigations of the scene took place.

South-east Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray is pledging to lobby the government for improvements.

She said: "We do have to do something about this road. I fully understand the A30 had to be improved as well. Now those improvements are coming to completion, it's time to focus the attention on the A38.

"Another fatality on this road is one too many. We shouldn't have seen as many fatalities as we've already seen. My heart goes out to the families of those affected".

A campaign launched to raise money for the family of the Saltash mum and her children has smashed its original £2000 target.

Paul Farnes is behind the online fundraiser, which has now had more than £12 thousand in donations.

Posting on the Just Giving page, he said: "Following a tragic accident on 9th July, Laura and Alfie Hopes were cruelly taken from this world and little Tommy was rushed to Bristol Hospital.

"In this family's time of need this page allows the community to help this wonderful family".

Tributes have been pouring in since the page was set up last Tuesday.

Laura's mother-in-law Angie replied: "As a family we can't thank each and everyone enough ,

"Your kind messages of love and strength just show Lee that Laura and Alfie made a wonderful impact on all your lives,and has really helped us .Thank you one and all".
