Fire has ripped through a scrapyard at a recycling centre in Truro.

Crews from the city got the call to Newham Road in the early hours of Monday morning.

Teams from Tolvaddon, Perranporth and Falmouth were also scrambled, just after 4am.

Pirate FM understands 16 cars were destroyed in what is reportedly being treated as a potential arson attack.

A spokesperson from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 04:19 this morning Critical Control received a call to Newham Road, Truro where there was described to be an area of scrap vehicles on fire.

"Appliances from Truro, Tolvaddon, Perranporth and Falmouth attended the incident which at this time is still on-going".

They later added: "We currently have two major pumping appliances from Truro in attendance damping down and monitoring hot spots".
