One month on from the Coverack flash floods, an elderly woman has been told she probably will not be able to go back home until after Christmas.

Penny Hammill had to be airlifted to safety as torrents swept through the village, turning the seafront into a waterfall.

Officials worked round-the-clock to repair the main road after chunks were washed away.

Penny tells ITV News Westcountry it was terrifying: "There was water everywhere. We were just a river really. The water was in the house right through.

"A little step bridge which is now upside down on the flat bonfire heap - that washed away completely and was down the river".

She added the damage was huge: "Especially in the garden. There are so many sticks and rubbish.

"Everybody's else's rubbish came down, all the sticks and a great big tree trunk that broke the greenhouse up".

At the time, Penny and her husband Chris described the moment they were trapped in their home, before being airlifted to safety.

The couple told ITV News Westcountry the water was up to their necks and admitted it was hard not to panic.

Penny said: "You couldn't bother to save anything. We had some important papers on the worktop but we couldn't even save them.

"It was so quick. Once it came in - once the water had bashed the door in - it came in so quick like a flood".
