Coastguards have described their desperate search for a missing woman found dead at a Cornish beauty spot.

Crews scoured the Lizard coastline on Tuesday, along with the Coastguard helicopter and lifeboats.

They were scrambled to help police looking for a missing 48-year-old from Falmouth.

She was airlifted to hospital after being found on rocks at Kynance Cove, but doctors could not save her.

Porthoustock Coastguard Rescue Team says its thoughts are with her friends and family.

Posting on Facebook, a spokesperson said: "The casualty's car was located in the car park so we flooded the area with search teams.

"After receiving a description of the casualty, three search teams were dispatched to search the area.

"One team headed from Kynance towards the Lizard, another team headed towards Mullion whilst the third team headed inland to search a circular walk.

"Lizard lifeboat deployed its Y boat and both boats conducted a shoreline search whilst R924 searched along the cliffs looking from top to bottom.

"After a lengthy search with lots of ground covered some teams were heading back towards the RV point to get further search tasking we heard over the radios that R924 had possibly spotted our casualty.

"With two shoreline Coastguard search teams heading to their location and the lifeboat also heading there, R924 confirmed it was our casualty and commenced winching.

"The lifeboat and Coastguard teams now at the scene with R924 stood by in case we needed to assist".

They added: "Our thoughts are with friends and family at this time".

Devon and Cornwall Police has said her death is not being treated as suspicious.

A force spokesperson said: "A police search was launched at noon on Monday [9th October] after a woman was reported missing from her home in Falmouth.

"Police officers, later assisted by HM Coastguard and a dog unit, were involved in the search to locate the 48-year-old woman.

"The body of the woman was located at the base of cliffs at Kynance Cove on the Lizard peninsula at 3.25pm by the Coastguard.

"She was airlifted by the Coastguard helicopter but was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for HM Coroner".

A Lizard RNLI Lifeboat Station spokesperson said: "The lifeboat was launched early this afternoon at the request of the Coastguard, following reports of a person at risk missing in the Kynance Cove area.

"A thorough shoreline search was carried out in company with local Cliff Rescue Teams and the MCA rescue helicopter.

"The helicopter located and recovered the missing person from nearby rocks to the privacy of an awaiting ambulance at Predannack airfield nearby.

"The lifeboat recovered her small sister vessel and returned to the station at 16.15 for wash down and recovery".
