Crews from seven Cornish towns have spent the morning battling a huge fire at a block of flats in Liskeard.

Firefighters from St Just to Callington were called to Baytree Hill first thing on Friday, along with back-up from Plymouth.

Two people have been rescued from the burning building, after the blaze broke out after 6am.

Teams are working to douse the flames and protect 'salvageable property' from the fire.

Police have told Pirate FM one person has been arrested on suspicion of arson.

An investigation is being carried out to try and work out what caused the blaze.

The Liskeard Facebook page has posted these photos from the scene.

A spokesperson from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 06:20am this morning, a call was received to a property fire on Dean Street in Liskeard.

"Firefighters commenced firefighting actions and rescued two persons from the property.

"This incident is currently on going and there are seven fire appliances in attendance along with one aerial ladder platform.

"Currently, crews from Liskeard, Callington, Bodmin, Lostwithiel and Looe, along with specialist breathing apparatus support from St Austell and an Incident Command Unit from St Just, are in attendance.

"Support is also being given by an Aerial Ladder Platform by crews from Crownhill".

They added: "As of 0900 this morning, the incident has been sectorised and crews are using six breathing apparatus, two 13.5m ladders, one safety jet and three hosereel jets on the fire.

"Firefighters are tackling the fire but also protecting salvageable property from the fire".

At 11am they added: "The incident has been confirmed as 'All persons accounted for'.

"The incident is being scaled back and all breathing apparatus have been withdrawn.

"A fire investigation team is on scene at this time trying to establish the cause of the fire."

A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were informed at around 6:30am of a fire at a flat in Bay Tree Hill, Liskeard.

"Police are supporting the fire service and at this time it is believed that all residents are accounted for.

"One man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of arson and awaits questioning".
