A fire has broken out at a sub-station in Cornwall, sparking power cuts.

Crews from Penzance, Hayle, St Just and Newquay have been tackling the blaze at Marazion.

Police closed roads in the area because there was so much smoke.

Western Power was also called to the scene on Monday morning.

A spokesperson from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two fire appliances from Penzance, one fire appliance from St Just and one fire appliance from Hayle are in attendance with engineers from Western Power Distribution at a fire involving a transformer at an electricity sub-station.

"Firefighters are preventing the fire from spreading and awaiting the electrical engineers to isolate the power supply before the fire can be extinguished.

"Due to the volume of smoke, roads in the area have been closed with assistance from Devon & Cornwall Police".

Update 12.19pm: "The Foam Response Pod from Newquay has been requested and is mobile to the incident along with a further Wholetime Officer."

Update 1.47pm: "Crews are currently defensive, awaiting confirmation from Western Power that the substation has been isolated, before crews can commence firefighting using Foam."

Update 3.30pm: "Currently we have 4 Major Pumps, BA Support Vehicle, Foam Unit, 4 Flexible Duty Officers and the Duty Area Manager in attendance. Crews are remaining defensive."
