Firefighters from across south-east Cornwall have rushed to the scene of a blaze at a landfill.

The site at Connon Bridge is closed after a smoke was reportedly billowing from the building.

Crews got the initial alert just before 7am, before deciding to call in specialist back-up.

Six fire engines, two water carriers and an aerial ladder platform are now working to douse the flames.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service has issued a health warning, urging locals to keep doors and windows shut.

A spokesperson said: "On receipt of a call to the Critical Control Centre, crews were mobilised to an industrial site that was seen to have smoke issuing from the building.

"On arrival the crews requested the assistance of more appliances and specialist equipment".

They added: "IMPORTANT HEALTH MESSAGE: Please can all homeowners and residents in the area keep their windows and doors closed".

At 9.15am Cornwall Fire and Rescue said: "At this time we have six appliances and three whole time officers on scene.

At 10.04am they added: "Crews using breathing apparatus, positive pressure ventilation, ground monitors and hose reel jets.

At 12pm they said: "There are no road closures in place but it is advised to drive slowly and with caution in the area."

And at 2.51pm they added: "One crew will remain on scene damping down hotspots. All other appliances will be returning to their stations."

They are being supported by an Incident Command Unit, an Operational Support Unit, two Water Carriers and an Aerial Ladder Platform.

"Crews are currently using four breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and thermal image cameras".

They added that public access to the site is "closed until further notice".
