Police have confirmed at least two people suffered serious injuries after a crash on the A38 in Cornwall.

Three cars were involved in the collision near Landrake, which shut the stretch between Carkeel and Trerulefoot for around nine hours.

Officers think one crossed the white lines after losing control on a bend, hitting a second vehicle almost head-on.

The air ambulance was scrambled just after 3pm on Saturday, along with firefighters from Liskeard, Bodmin and Saltash.

A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police said: "At about 3.10 PM in the afternoon of Saturday 18th November 2017, a serious injury road traffic collision occurred on the A38 near Landrake.

"A blue motor car, travelling from the direction of Tideford towards Landrake, apparently failed to negotiate a left hand bend before crossing the continuous white line system at the location, colliding almost head on with a VW Passatt travelling in the opposite direction.

"The VW Golf has then collided with a Citroen C4 motor car, travelling west behind the Passatt, which had attempted to take avoiding action.

"The most serious injuries were sustained by the driver of the VW Golf and his rear seat passenger.

"Officers from Camborne, Bodmin and Plymouth Traffic Centres attended the scene and commenced an investigation".

A spokesperson from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "The rescue tender from Bodmin and appliances from Bodmin, Liskeard, Saltash community fire stations responded to this incident.

"On arrival, a three vehicle road traffic collision was discovered. Heavy traffic has been reported in the area".

At 4.30pm they added: "Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service are now starting to leave the scene.

"All persons concerned now in the care of South West Ambulance Service. Devon and Cornwall Police still on scene".

Diversions were set up towards Callington and Saltash and drivers leaving the Duchy were being urged to use the A30.

nrix Traffic and Travel reported major delays in the area and said: "The A38 is closed in both directions

"There is queueing traffic due to an accident. Three vehicles are involved between the A374 Trerulefoot Roundabout and the B3271 Liskeard Road.

"Emergency services are at the scene dealing. It is affecting traffic between Saltash and Liskeard".

Inrix added that the road would remain closed for accident and investigation work, before recovery and clean up could take place.

Highways England South West confirmed that the road had re-opened, just before 12.30am on Sunday morning.

Devon and Cornwall Police are appealing for anyone who saw what happened to come forward.

A force spokesperson added: "Any witnesses are requested to contact the police, quoting reference number 20171118-0540".
