A teenage girl has suffered what are described as severe injuries after falling 20ft from rocks in west Cornwall.

The Coastguard rescue helicopter was scrambled after the 16-year-old ended up in the water near Newlyn.

Her friend, who raised the alarm, went into the sea and held her head up, before she was lifted into the Penlee Lifeboat.

Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team also got the call to Bell Rock near Penlee Point late on Sunday afternoon, along with police, paramedics and the air ambulance.

A spokesperson from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency confirmed the casualty was airlifted to Derriford.

Meantime a young lad from Newlyn has been hailed a hero after helping to save her life.

The friend went into the water after her and held her head above the water until the lifeboat arrived.

Rescuers said if he hadn't of acted so quickly, the girl might have drowned.

Posting on Facebook, a spokesperson from Penlee Lifeboat said: "Penlee Inshore Lifeboat, ‘Mollie & Ivor Dent’, received a launch request from Falmouth Coastguard at 14:42pm following reports that a teenager had fallen 20ft onto rocks in the sea near Penlee Point.

"Penlee’s Inshore Lifeboat launched immediately and located the casualty near Bell Rock. The casualty was being held above the surface by a friend who very bravely alerted the emergency services and entered the sea to support his friend who suffered severe injuries.

"Penzance Cliff Rescue teams, paramedics, the search and rescue helicopter and the air ambulance were also tasked.

"Two of the Penlee Lifeboat Crew entered the water. The casualty was very cold and in a lot of pain so they lifted the casualty and friend into the lifeboat.

"Two Paramedics who were also on scene were put on board from the old lifeboat slip to help stabilise the casualty and the lifeboat then headed to Newlyn.

"Once alongside, the casualty was taken by ambulance to the helicopter that landed on Newlyn Green and flown to Derriford Hospital.

"This was a tremendous effort by all the emergency services involved. The brave teenage friend who kept her above the surface until the lifeboat possibly saved her life. Well done all!"
