A teenage girl has died after being hit by a train in Cornwall on Christmas Eve.

Police were called to Lostwithiel just before 6.30pm on Sunday evening.

The 19-year-old local could not be saved and died at the scene.

The incident is believed to have happened on the tracks rather than at the train station.

Officers from the British Transport Police carried out an investigation and are not treating her death as suspicious.

A spokesperson for the British Transport Police said: "BTP officers attended the line close to Lostwithiel Railway station, Lostwithiel, on Sunday 24th December 2017 after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

"Officers from BTP and Devon and Cornwall Police attended the incident, which was reported to police at 6.25pm, but sadly a 19-year-old woman from the local area died at the scene.

"Her next of kin have been informed.

"The death is not believed to be suspicious at this time."
