Cornish firefighters issue warning over chimney fires

Wadebridge Community Fire Station have re-issued advice around chimneys as they dealt with the first chimney fire of the year.

A spokesperson for Wadebridge Communioty Fire Station said:

"Over the last three years Cornwall firefighters have tackled 571 chimney fires, where most of the fires were preventable."

Some of the tips they give to reduce the chances of a chimney fire include:

  • Sweeping it before use.
  • Making sure there is always afire guard in front of the fire.
  • Extinguishing the fire before leaving the house or going to bed.
  • Regularly checking that the fire alarm works.
  • Never lighting a fire with petrol or paraffin.
  • Using spark guards.

Not all chimneys need to be cleaned as frequently, they recommend the following timescales.

  • Gas fires - Once a year if they are designed for sweeping.
  • Oil fires - Once a year.
  • Once a year for smokeless fuel or twice a year for coal.
  • Wood burning fires - Four times a year when being used.
