UPDATE: An armed robbery cordons off busy Truro street

A manhunt is underway after an armed robbery at a jewellers in Truro.

Officers rushed to Michael Spiers just before 10am on Wednesday.

The bottom of Lemon Street was cordoned off and a scene guard was put in place.

A gun was found on the floor and has been seized and the suspects fled the area.

Police have confirmed they are searching for around four or five men thought to have been involved.

A member of the public was hurt but not seriously. 

Inspectors say it is an extremely rare thing to happen in Truro and thankfully no-one was seriously injured.

A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police said: "An investigation has been launched following an armed robbery at Michael Spiers Jewellers on Lemon Street, Truro.

"Officers were notified just before 10am today, Wednesday 10th January 2018, to reports of an armed robbery involving several men at the jewellers.

"A member of the public is believed to have been injured in the incident. His injuries are said to be minor.

"Police are in attendance and a scene guard is in place whilst scenes of crime officers carry out enquiries.

"The male suspects are currently outstanding and a search is underway."

Inspector Rick Milburn added: “We have reports that four to five armed men entered the jewellers. A firearm has been seized at the scene.

“It is believed that a noxious liquid was sprayed at a member of the public.

"His injuries are being treated as minor and paramedics treated him at the scene.

“This is an extremely rare incident to happen in Truro and thankfully no one was seriously harmed in the incident.

“Scenes of Crime Officers are currently at the scene carrying out further enquiries.

"Searches are underway for the suspects.

“We are continuing dynamic inquiries at present and ask anyone with information to contact us via 101 quoting log number 204 10/01/18.”

Inspector Rick Milburn has given the following update: "We have now been able to remove the scene guard in Lemon Street and Truro City Centre is slowly returning to normal.

"Truro Police and their Criminal Investigation Department led by Detective Inspector Pete Found are tirelessly working with colleagues to progress this dynamic investigation.

"I’d like to thank the witnesses who were initially present during the incident and showed their support to Police.

"If any members of the public witnessed this incident and have not spoken with us I would ask that you phone on 101 quoting log 204 10/01/18.

"Even the smallest detail may help and could make a difference to this investigation."
