A30 lorry fire

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 6:35am 12th January 2018. (Updated at 8:27am 12th January 2018)

This is the lorry fire that caused big problems for drivers heading out of Cornwall on the A30.

The HGV was carrying 17 tonnes of gammon when the blaze broke out in the early hours of Thursday.

Lane closures were in place just over the border near Sourton for most of the day.

At one stage, the eastbound stretch between Sourton Cross and Okehampton Services was shut completely.

Posting on Twitter on Thursday morning, the Roads Policing Alliance team warned drivers to expect delays.

They said: "On scene at A30 eastbound Okehampton with an overnight HGV trailer fire.

"Significant damage to both trailer and the road itself. Arranging suitable recovery.

"Will need major lifting kit so may take some time. Please drive with care at scene".

The incident was not completely cleared until just after 4pm, when Highways England tweeted: " eastbound between  near Sourton Cross & the  near Tongue End.

"Recovery of the burnt out vehicle complete and all lanes now open. Delays in the area clearing well".
