Firefighters scrambled to this crash on the A38 reveal how a child's car seat saved a baby's life.

Crews say the vehicle hit the crash barrier, span and rolled onto its side near Ivybridge over the weekend.

It landed upright on an embankment, but a young couple and their 12-month-old baby were not trapped.

Remarkably, all three escaped with minor injuries and it has prompted a safety message.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service believes the baby's life was saved by the seat being securely fastened.

A spokesperson said: "One fire appliance from Ivybridge, one from Modbury and the Heavy Rescue Tender from Middlemoor were sent to a report of a road traffic collision.

"On arrival, crews confirmed that the incident involved two vehicles and that no persons were trapped. Fire crews made the vehicles and scene safe using one hose reel jet, one dry powder extinguisher and small tools. First aid was rendered to a baby until the arrival of the ambulance.

"Crews assisted the police in making the vehicle the safe and comforting the occupants until South West Ambulance Service arrived.

"The incident involved a single car colliding with the central reservation, spinning and after rolling on its side coming to a stop on all four wheels on the embankment, facing the opposite direction.

"The vehicle sustained severe front end damage with both air bags operating. Despite the severity of the collision, the occupants, a young couple and 12-month-old baby escaped with minor injuries. This was to a large extent because the adults were wearing their seats belts and most importantly, the baby was secured in a suitably fastened baby seat.

"Without doubt the baby was saved from serious injuries because of this.

"Babies and children are more vulnerable than adults to the physical impacts and energies released during a road traffic incident, and it is therefore, of vital importance that they are suitably seated and restrained for all car journeys.
