A new pupmping operation is in place to protect one Cornwall town from flooding.

The Environment Agency worked at the site at Loe Bar earlier this month, in a bid to protect homes in Helston.

Now they are constantly watching water flow - and pumping thousands of gallons of extra water out to sea with huge pipes and generators.

A spokeperson for the Environment Agency said: "The Environment Agency has now installed three 24inch and six 12inch pumps at Loe Bar and these will continue to pump water for at least six months.

"The flow in the tunnel at Loe Bar is being monitored closely and we can now predict quite confidently when tide states will impact on tunnel flow.

"We have utilised an additional 100 metres of barrier to provide protection of the pumps from wave action on site."

It comes after a 24-hour operation to launch the new system, after a large overflow pipe was reportedly damaged following a landslide on the coastpath close-by, as a result of recent storms.

The route was closed and a new one put in place, after Porthleven Coastguard Rescue Team is urging walkers to stay away, warning it is "extremely unstable".
