Can you help save 450 hens from the slaughter in Cornwall?

The British Hens Welfare Trust has put out an urgent appeal to re-home hundreds of birds.

The animal welfare charity is holding hen collections in both Redruth and Liskeard this Saturday 11th February,

It is hoped that people will attend and be able to offer the ex-commercial birds loving retirement homes.

The birds are all 18 months old and have been working hard laying eggs for supermarkets to sell, or to put in processed foods like cakes and quiches.

There are still 150 hens without homes to go and anyone who can give them a new lease of life should get in touch with the charity before Friday to book.

Kim Jepheart, Redruth Co-ordinator, said: "There is no better feeling than watching these hens flourish after they emerge from the commercial system.

"They have so much to offer beyond eggs and will soon become much-loved pets.

"If you've ever considered giving some ex-bats a home my only advice would be to do it. You won't regret it."

Anyone interested in giving a few down-on-their-cluck hens a second chance is urged to register on the website and then call 01884 860084.

Please note that hens need to be reserved in advance of the re-homing day and, whilst the feel good factor of saving these hens from slaughter comes free of charge, the charity asks for a donation to help cover its costs.
