One person has died after a serious crash that has shut a stretch of the M5.

Four others have been injured after the collision between junctions 25 and 26.

Pirate FM understands a car ploughed through the central reservation in Somerset.

Police, paramedics and the air ambulance were scrambled first thing on Friday morning.

Officials confirmed that the road re-opened just before 5pm.

Avon and Somerset police tweeted: "Both carriageways between junctions 25 & 26 remain closed. Sadly one person has died. Four others have been injured".

The collision sparked queues on both sides of the carriageway for several miles.

Drivers tweeted to say they had been stuck in tailbacks for well over an hour.

Anyone travelling further south on the M5 was urged to consider using a different route, like the A30.

Highways England says: "The M5 in Somerset is closed in both directions between j26 (Wellington) and Junction 25 (Taunton) due to a serious incident. All emergency services are at the scene".
