Police have launched appeals for clues after an awful day on the south-west's roads that led to fatal crashes on the A30 and M5.

Officers were called to reports of "multiple vehicles" colliding with a body, believed to have been in the road, on Tuesday morning.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene between junctions 28 and 29 and the stretch was closed for most of the day.

Devon and Cornwall Police are working to try to identify him and appealing for anyone who saw something to come forward.

A force spokesperson said: "Police continue their investigation following a serious incident on Tuesday 13th February 2018 which closed the M5 at Cullompton.

"Officers were notified at around 6.40am to reports that a body had been hit by multiple vehicles on the M5 between junctions 28 and 29 southbound.

"The identity of the deceased man has yet to be confirmed.

"The road was closed for around eight hours whilst officers from Exeter CID and the Roads Policing Team carried out full and thorough examination in what was a multi-agency response.

"A full investigation of the scene was completed and enquiries are continuing to determine the identity of the deceased and the reason for the body being on the motorway".

Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have information is asked to contact police via 101@dc.police.uk or by calling 101 quoting log number 119 of 13/02/18.

The second involved a BMW and an HGV, believed to have been caught in a head-on crash on the A30 near Honiton.

Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed the driver of the car who lost his life is a man, believed to be in his 60s.

A force spokesperson said: "A man has died after the car he was travelling in was involved in a collision on the A30 at Upottery near Honiton.

"Police were notified at around 7am on Tuesday 13 February to reports of a head-on collision between a BMW and a HGV lorry close to the junction with the Seven Mile Straight at Upottery.

"The driver of the BMW, a man believed to be in his 60s, received fatal injuries as a result of the collision and was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has yet to be formally identified.

"Closures were put in place in both directions between the A35 and A303 for approximately seven hours whilst vital investigative work was carried out into this incident".

If anyone has any information about this incident please contact police via 101@dc.police.uk or by calling 101 quoting 0127 130218.
