Police have launched appeals for clues after an awful day on the south-west's roads that led to fatal crashes on the A30 and M5.

Officers were called to reports of "multiple vehicles" colliding with a body, believed to have been in the road, on Tuesday morning.

A man was pronounced dead at the scene between junctions 28 and 29 and the stretch was closed for most of the day.

Devon and Cornwall Police are working to try to identify him and appealing for anyone who saw something to come forward.

A force spokesperson said: "Police continue their investigation following a serious incident on Tuesday 13th February 2018 which closed the M5 at Cullompton.

"Officers were notified at around 6.40am to reports that a body had been hit by multiple vehicles on the M5 between junctions 28 and 29 southbound.

"The identity of the deceased man has yet to be confirmed.

"The road was closed for around eight hours whilst officers from Exeter CID and the Roads Policing Team carried out full and thorough examination in what was a multi-agency response.

"A full investigation of the scene was completed and enquiries are continuing to determine the identity of the deceased and the reason for the body being on the motorway".
