Cornwall is being invited to 'Love Your Beach' on this rainy Valentine's Day.

Thousands of people across the Duchy are joining in beach cleans to help spread the love.

Your Shore Beach Rangers, a project of Cornwall Wildlife Trust and Cornwall College are coordinating the event and calling for everyone to join in and show their love for the marine and coastal environment.

Jenn Sandiford, the Trust's Your Shore Beach Rangers Youth Engagement Officer said: "After the huge storms we've experienced so far this winter, a large amount of rubbish has been washed up on our beaches.

"Plastic is now high on the agenda throughout the country and we are so lucky that Cornwall already has a massive plastic free movement in place.

"It's estimated that there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic in the ocean.

"It's time to act, make a change and be part of something big this February 14th!"

Volunteers are joining forces to give their local beaches a good clean, including those from Holywell Surf Lifesaving Club and Praze an Beeble Women's Institute.

The Your Shore Network groups involved are Friends of Par Beach, Friends of Fowey, Three Bays Wildlife Group, Looe Marine Conservation Group, St Agnes Marine Conservation Group, Falmouth Marine Conservation Group, Newquay Marine Group, Mounts Bay Marine Group and Polzeath Marine Conservation Group.

Everybody's welcome to take part in Cornwall's first Love Your Beach Day. Even if you can't make the bigger beach cleans, one person can still have an impact.

You can find out more here.

People in Cornwall are being encouraged to get down to their local beach, do a mini beach clean, draw or make a heart, take a picture and get it on social media using the following hashtags; #loveyourbeach #loveyourbeachfrom'nameofbeach' i.e. #loveyourbeachfromnewquay #yourshorenetwork.

The Your Shore Beach Rangers is a project funded by Our Bright Future as part of Cornwall Wildlife Trust and Cornwall College, Newquay.

It aims to build on the already established Your Shore Network, helping in creating new and sustainable voluntary marine conservation groups around the county, encouraging more young people to get involved and offering training and development of those all-important skills for the future!
