Revealed... the domestic abuse happening across Cornwall and Devon on Valentine's Day.

Police say there were more than 100 reports on this day alone last year.

We are being urged to call 999 in such an emergency and to seek help.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police posted on Twitter: "Last year 123 cases of domestic abuse were reported and/or committed to us on Valentine's Day.

"Abuse is never ok.

"If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, help is available.

"In an emergency, always call 999."

You can find advice from the police force here.

Forms of domestic abuse include:

  • Physical - pushing, hitting, kicking, choking, biting
  • Emotional - putting you down, humiliating you, calling you names
  • Psychological - intimidation, coercion, threats
  • Sexual - forcing sexual acts, withholding affection as punishment
  • Financial - taking/controlling your money, destroying your credit rating
  • Honour-based - abusive action taken when a family or a community believes that the victim has breached the family's honour or the honour code, including rape, assault and murder

Recognising the signs

One or more of the following signs may suggest a person is being abused:

  • Absence from work or school or social events
  • Fear of their partner, references to their partner's anger
  • Personality changes (eg an outgoing person becomes withdrawn)
  • Repeated unexplained injuries

There are many myths surrounding domestic abuse. By believing them we allow the problem to continue:

  1. Domestic abuse is only physical
  2. It only happens in poor families on council estates
  3. More people would leave if the abuse was that bad
  4. Abusers grow up in violent homes
  5. Some people like violence
  6. People ask for it. They deserve what they get
  7. Abusive people have a mental illness
  8. Alcohol and drugs make people violent
  9. They lose their temper sometimes, that’s all
  10. Domestic violence is a private matter, you shouldn’t get involved
