A cold weather warning has been issued for Cornwall as that icy blast bears down.

The Met Office has put out a yellow alert, with temperatures set to plummet across next week.

At the moment, it is in force from 9am on Friday until 12pm on Monday but forecasters say that could change.

You can blame that very chilly air from Russia and Siberia, known as the beast from the east.

Two weather warnings have been issued for snow on Monday and Tuesday, but they do not cover Cornwall.

In fact, forecaster Martin Bowles does not think the Duchy will witness much of the white stuff.

He told Pirate FM: "By the time those systems get across to Cornwall, most of the moisture will have come out of it and so we probably won't get much snow.

"I do think there'll be a few flurries of snow, particularly over the moors, but it's going to be a mostly cold and dry week in Cornwall".

Describing the so-called beast from the east, he added: "That's going to draw down some really cold air, right over from western Russia and even Siberia, into the UK so temperatures will be much below average.

"We do generally refer to the first of March as being the start of spring. This particular first of March isn't going to feel like spring. It's going to feel distinctly wintry, even in Cornwall".

So scrapers not wellies at the ready then and you can read three things you might be doing wrong when you de-ice the car here.

What does the yellow alert mean?

The Met Office says: "There is an 80% probability of severe cold weather/icy conditions/heavy snow between 0900 on Friday 23rd February and 1200 on Monday 26th February in parts of England.

"This weather could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services" - check the cold weather plan for Cornwall here.

"As the weekend approaches, average temperatures are likely to fall bringing a likelihood of meeting low temperature criteria across all regions. This with mainly fine and dry weather initially until Sunday, where snow showers will become more likely.

"The cold continental east or southeasterly wind will also become a factor, strengthening enough to give significant wind chill.

"The alert is likely to be reviewed on Friday, and perhaps upgraded and extended further into the new week as the cold weather looks likely to continue".
