A severe cold weather warning for Cornwall has been upgraded as that icy blast bears down.

The Met Office alert level is now at amber, with temperatures set to plummet across next week.

Forecasters have also extended the warning, will now be in force until Thursday the 1st March.

You can blame that very chilly air from Russia and Siberia, known as the beast from the east.

What does the amber alert mean?

The warning reads: "Cold weather is currently established across the country with widespread overnight frosts.

"However colder conditions are expected to extend westwards across England during the weekend bringing a significant, and prolonged period of wintry weather.

"Whilst temperatures are likely to recover slightly by day on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with some sunshine, there will be a notable wind chill, especially in the southeast.

"During Monday and Tuesday, snow showers are expected to move into eastern areas, before spreading westwards across England. These have the potential to align into bands, bringing some significant accumulations.

"Not everyone will see snowfall, however 5 -10cm is possible where showers do line up, with the greatest risk across eastern and southeastern counties. These will also be accompanied by bitterly cold temperatures, and a significant wind chill.

"These cold, wintery conditions are then expected to continue Wednesday, and likely beyond, however confidence is low regarding any details at this stage".

Two weather warnings have been issued for snow on Monday and Tuesday, but they do not cover Cornwall.

Forecaster Martin Bowles told Pirate FM he does not think the Duchy will witness much of the white stuff.

"By the time those systems get across to Cornwall, most of the moisture will have come out of it and so we probably won't get much snow.

"I do think there'll be a few flurries of snow, particularly over the moors, but it's going to be a mostly cold and dry week in Cornwall".

Describing the so-called beast from the east, he added: "That's going to draw down some really cold air, right over from western Russia and even Siberia, into the UK so temperatures will be much below average.

"We do generally refer to the first of March as being the start of spring. This particular first of March isn't going to feel like spring. It's going to feel distinctly wintry, even in Cornwall".

Fresh winter health warnings are being sounded by Public Health England because of the cold snap.

The Met Office has forecast that temperatures will drop over the weekend and to prepare for a prolonged spell of cold.

Dr Thomas Waite from its Extreme Events team said: "Cold temperatures, indoors and out, pose real health risks to many and every winter we know that thousands of people get ill and even die following exposure to cold conditions.

"As forecasters tell us next week temperatures will fall, it’s critical that if you know anyone over 65, with young children or who has heart or lung conditions, that you keep an eye on them and think what help they may need.

"Staying warm by heating your home to at least 18°C can be crucial to stay well".
