The warning from Treliske as it faces extreme pressure

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 3:12pm 9th March 2018. (Updated at 4:44pm 9th March 2018)

People in Cornwall are being urged to avoid A&E over the weekend as Treliske continues to face extreme pressure.

An emergency control centre been set up to help Cornwall's biggest hospital cope with demand.

It follows a spike in admissions after the Duchy was battered by ice and snow.

Bosses are fighting to get patients home where they can to free up beds, as the hospital remains on the highest possible alert.

Throughout February, Treliske was on a Level Four, or so-called 'black alert' for 26 out of 28 days.

Bosses apologised and blamed winter pressures and a growing demand for beds at Treliske.

A spokesperson for the Royal Cornwall Hospital said: "The Gold Command team (senior clinicians and executives from across the health and care system) will convene twice daily over the weekend to maintain safe care.

"No patient should be delayed in their departure from hospital if they are medically fit to leave.

"We will ensure that every patient who can leave hospital does leave hospital this weekend and we have asked all services to run a full service with increased staff levels for the whole weekend.

"We need relatives and friends to help by collecting and supporting patients immediately when they are ready to leave hospital.

"As in other parts of the country, patient choice on care placement is suspended for two weeks.

"This means patients going to a care placement will need to take the first available bed in Cornwall so that we can accommodate more urgent patients.

"Care assessment does not need to be undertaken in an acute hospital setting and can be done in an alternative place of care.

"We are asking our local community to only use the Emergency Department in a genuine emergency.

"We have a wide range of services that can support people in the community including pharmacies, GPs, Minor Injury Units, the Urgent Care Centre in Penzance which is open 24/7 and you can always call NHS 111 for help and advice.

"We have secured additional primary care support and GPs are working alongside colleagues in West Cornwall Urgent Care Centre and Camborne & Redruth Primary Care Centre to prevent admission into hospital.

"We will cancel non-urgent surgical procedures at Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

"A top priority for Gold Command is to urgently return surgical beds at Royal Cornwall Hospital to surgical teams to provide safe care.

"Health and care services have been under extreme pressure over this winter period and we need every effort from our staff and community to help us return to normal service levels."
