WATCH: St Ives Mermaid launches 'swim squad'

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 5:35pm 16th March 2018.

The most magical swim in Cornwall as lucky children get ready to jump in with the Duchy's very own mermaid.

Laura Evans, better known as the St Ives Mermaid, is hosting the swim to raise money for mental health charity MIND.

And the limited 15 tickets have already sold out - within an hour of going on sale.

It comes as Laura launches her own 'swim squad', where people are encouraged to share their seaside adventures and check out the online store, with funds being raised for charity.

She even promises that members can have the chance to join her on her new inflatable clam shell.

She said: "I wanted to start some products to go in line with the St Ives Mermaid brand - but rather than just having my face splashed over everything, I wanted to create something that felt a bit more inclusive, that people could feel a part of.

"That was for children so when they meet me they can have a souvenir and feel like some kind of mermaid squad.

"For adults, what I find is that you can create a great community online and locally, and this was something that was relatable to everybody.

"As part of that, it's building my brand and my business, hopefully, but at the same time being able to fundraise."

Among the merch, you can grab tote bags, swim bags and badges.

Laura says her decision behind raising money was motivated by her own mental health, as well as being very topical.

She said: "People are talking about mental health at the moment and my journey with my own mental health, it goes hand in hand with my journey to becoming a mermaid.

"I'm not saying becoming a mermaid cured my mental health issues, but it was my relationship with the sea when I moved back from London having suffered with post traumatic stress disorder.

"I've been talking about my own mental health openly for the past few years, and I've found that the more that I have talked, the more other people have become comfortable opening up.

"We're not tip-toeing around it as much anymore, and I think the more we can push for that the better.

"The more we can support services that support people the better, because they are really under strain."

As part of her latest project, the magical swim on Saturday is being held at Kenegie Manor, who have offered the use of their pool for free.

She said: "I think from a practical perspective, obviously many people know that I do wash up on the beach in St Ives and that is really weather dependent - I can only plan that realistically two or three days in advance.

"If I can book a swimming pool, that can be booked weeks or months in advance."

But even though this time sold out in record time, Laura says that's not the end of it.

She said: "I've had an even more positive reaction than I imagined - there will be more, definitely.

"It does help that there is a lot of good will in it, we are raising money for charity."

As the St Ives Mermaid Swim Squad expands, Laura now hopes it will bring the community together too.

She said: "It's incredibly special and I really want to focus on it.

"Regardless of age, just being a group that's positive for mind, body and the oceans.

"I want to use the group to organise social things like beach cleans as well - that's incredibly important.

"I don't necessarily have a specific plan in place, I never do - I just go with what feels right and this feels really right."
