WATCH: Cornwall welcomes 40th International Mining Games

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 7:04am 25th March 2018.

Teams from around the world get ready to celebrate Cornwall's heritage at the 40th International Mining Games.

The event, being held in the Duchy, will see 40 'elite' teams compete in traditional mining techniques.

Hosted this year by the Camborne School of Mines, part of the University of Exeter, there will be three days of events at King Edward Mine, Camborne.

Alex Perry, Mining Games captain, said: "We are very honoured to host the 40th Annual competition back in Cornwall.

"This event keeps the old techniques alive but also brings mining schools across the world together and life-long friends are made - which is what the mining industry is all about - camaraderie and team work."

Over the competition, there will be seven gruelling events in all, giving crowds a 'unique opportunity' to witness traditional mining skills first-hand, up close and personal.

And organisers say they are expecting an incredibly close competition.

Alex Hutching, captain of the Camborne School of Mines womens team, said: "We're really excited to learn these old mining techniques - where else can you do this in the UK?"

Kicking off on Thursday, 29th March, teams will spend the first day testing equipment.

The Friday then sees the real games begin - with the womens, mixed and alumni teams competition day.

And on Saturday, you can see the mens teams compete, as they battle it out for the final title.
