Coastguards have confirmed a man has suffered serious injuries after a fall at an 80ft blowhole on the Cornish coast.

More photos have emerged of the major rescue at Trevone Round Hole, that lasted most of Tuesday evening.

Padstow and Newquay Coastguard Rescue Teams were scrambled on Tuesday night, along with the helicopter and air ambulance.

Medics had to be taken into the collapsed sea cave by cliff rescue technicians in an operation described as 'very complex'.

Officials say that the 56-year-old tumbled around 40ft into the hole, but the extent of his injuries are not known.

Posting on Facebook, Newquay Coastguard Rescue Team confirmed they got the call at around 6.30pm.

A spokesperson said: "The team were paged to assist Padstow Coastguard to a person who had fallen at the blowhole, Trevone.

"The casualty had suffered serious injuries and a complex rescue operation coordinated by the Pastow team was required to extricate the casualty.

"This involved medics from Cornwall Air Ambulance being taken by cliff rescue technicians to the bottom and Maritime and Coastguard Agency helicopter Rescue 924 winching the casualty out and conveying to hospital".

A Padstow Coastguard spokesperson added: "Team requested by Falmouth Coastguard to a 56 year old who had fallen around 40ft into the round hole.

"Upon teams arrival SWAS Paramedics and Cornwall Air Ambulance was already on scene.

"With no safe access into the round hole they awaited our arrival for assistance.

"Full cliff rescue equipment was set up and a cliff man and an air ambulance paramedic was lowered down to the casualty in an assisted decent. A second cliff man was then lowered to assist.

"Newquay Coastguard then arrived on scene to provide assistance in the rescue.

"Coastguard Helicopter 924 was also tasked and arrived on scene a short while later.

"A helicopter winch-man was lowered into the round hole along with a stretcher for recovery.

"The casualty sustained serious injuries so had to be treated on scene with pain relief and first aid before transport.

"Due to the weather closing in and the light fading Cornwall Air Ambulance had to leave the scene and return to their station. This left the two paramedics on scene.
