Body found on popular beach in Newquay

A woman's body has been found on a popular beach in Newquay.

The discovery was made at Fistral just before 3 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon.

Two Coastguard rescue teams, a helicopter and both Newquay lifeboats were scrambled in a search.

Paramedics and police were also called and officers are investigating how the casualty came to be in the water.

The woman has not been formally identified but the death is not being treating the death as suspicious.

Posting on Facebook, Newquay RNLI said: "Our volunteers were called out just after 3.30pm on Wednesday and launched both inshore lifeboats to assist coastguard teams, the coastguard search & rescue helicopter, police and lifeguards in a search of Fistral Bay following an earlier incident".

A spokesperson from Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police, Coastguard and ambulance were called at 2.50pm on Wednesday 4th April following the discovery of the body of a woman on Fistral Beach in Newquay.

"Enquiries are being undertaken to establish how she came to be in the water but the death is not believed suspicious at this time.

"Next of kin are being traced. Formal ID has not yet been carried out".
