Firefighters called to a blaze at Hayle Towans think is was started on purpose.

Crews were scrambled to a stretch of burning gorse at Mexico Towans on Thursday afternoon.

A spokesperson said: "Cornwall Fire and Rescue service received a call from a member of the public reporting a fire in the open near Mexico Towans, Hayle.

"One pump from Hayle Community Fire Station and a whole time officer was immediately mobilised by Fire Control.

"On arrival the officer in charge confirmed a small fire in the open involving gorse. Crews extinguished the fire using beaters and monitored hotspots.

"Arson was suspected and the details have been passed onto the police.

"Anyone with information on fires being deliberately started in the countryside are advised to anonymously call Crimestoppers free on 0800 555 111 or contact Devon and Cornwall Police on 101 with information".

They added: "Arson puts both the public and firefighters at unnecessary risk. It ties up resources that could be in demand for other more serious incidents.
