A fire has broken out at Penzance railway station.

Locals in the area reported seeing smoke and flames coming from the building on Tuesday night.

Officials told Pirate FM that a diesel carriage caught fire but no one was hurt.

Five appliances were called from Penzance, Hayle, Tolvaddon and St Just just after 8pm.

The blaze was brought under control and firefighters used jets to put it out.

Lance lives across the road.

He told Pirate FM: "Looking down into the station it's the actual front of the train, the engine that's on fire, or has been on fire, and it all seems to be OK now and under control.

"We were a bit concerned but there is a big wall between us so there is nothing to worry about."

Tuba was at Sainsbury's walking down in that direction.

She said: "There was fire brigades coming down and there was smoke coming from down there, then we saw the videos saying that it was on fire.

"The staff looked panicked so we thought it must be something serious. It's not something we've seen here before.

"The smell has given me a headache as well."

Adam Pickup-Bowker from Connor Downs was in the area.

He said: "It was a bit crazy, lots of fire engines and the train was smouldering quite a lot.

"I spoke to someone who said it came in smouldering, and the fire crews have reacted really quickly. It seems they've done really well.

"There is a lot of smoke coming out of there though."

A spokesperson for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 20:02 this evening the Critical Control Centre received a call stating that a train carriage was on fire in the platform at Penzance Railway Station.

"22:27 Update. Can now be confirmed that fire was in the Train Power Car.

"The Power Car has now been moved from Penzance Railway Station to another location. Crews are still remaining with the Power Car checking for hotspots.
