Warning to west Cornwall after string of distraction thefts

A police warning has gone out after a string of reports of distraction thefts in west Cornwall.

Officers say they were alerted to incidents at businesses in Hayle, St Ives and Penzance on Wednesday.

We are being urged to be vigilant and anyone who has any information is asked to contact police.

A spokesperson for the Devon and Cornwall Police said: "A man has given a story line of a family member leaving a walking stick in the shop, whilst staff members have gone to look for it the man has stolen cash from tills, staff handbags etc.

"He is described as white, in his 30s, 6 feet 3 inches in height, wearing a long trench style coat to his knees in a dark check in one shop, and a knee length black coat in another.

"Please be wary of this and any other similar story lines.

"If you have a man giving this storyline or similar suspicious activity please phone 999.

"If you have any information please email 101@dc.police.uk, or phone 101 quoting crime CR/032843/18.

"Information can also be passed to crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."
