A dog has been winched to safety after falling down a cliff near a Cornish mine.

Coastguard rescuers were called to the scene at Levant on Thursday evening.

They set up a rescue rope and a member of the crew went down to bring the pet to safety.

The dog was then reunited with its owner at the top off the cliff.

Now all dog owners are being urged to keep pets on leads near cliff edges and never to attempt a rescue yourself.

A Penzance Coastguard Rescue Team spokesperson posted on Facebook: "We were tasked Today the 19th April at 7.30pm together with Land's End Coastguard Search & Rescue Team to a report of a dog over the cliff in the Levant Mine area.

"We arrived on scene and met with the owner who showed us where the dog was.

"We then setup for a rope rescue and a technician went down the cliff to rescue the dog.

"Once secured, we recovered the technician and dog back up the cliff via winch and reunited the dog with its owner.

"We then re-stowed all of our kit and made our way back to our vehicles then the teams returned to their stations ready for the next time we are needed."

They added: "We would like to take this opportunity to ask that all dog owners try and keep dogs under control (preferably with a lead) near cliff edges, but should anything happen, do not put yourself in danger.

"The owner today did exactly the right thing in dialing 999 and asking for the coastguard.

"If you see someone you think is in trouble on the coast or at sea, call 999 and ask for the coastguard."
