Cornish mum jailed for poisoning baby with salt

A mum from Cornwall is waking up behind bars after she was jailed for poisoning her baby with what works out to more than a tablespoon of salt.

Prosecutors told the court that medical experts estimated the 18-month-old had ingested between 21 and 24 grams.

A jury heard how that amount would have been administered intentionally and that it was a "miracle" that no lasting damage had been caused.

Pirate FM understands the tot made a full recovery after treatment at two hospitals, including Treliske.

The woman from the St Austell area, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with administering a poison or noxious substance to endanger life.

She denied the charge but a jury at Truro Crown Court found her guilty last month.

The judge ordered a psychiatric report, but the court heard how it showed 'no relevant psychiatric features' to be considered.

Now she will spend four years in prison, after being sentenced on Friday.

Judge Carr said: "An aggravating factor is that, not long before, you had searched for salt levels in children. And having administered the salt you did not seek medical treatment."

He added: "Overwhelming evidence on that day shows that you gave her a significant amount of salt. Sodium levels, at levels simply not seen in a child that survives."
