The Stadium for Cornwall is 'within touching distance'

The Government has promised it will 'do what it can' to get funding for the Stadium for Cornwall across the line.

The team behind the plans for the 6,000-seater near Truro met ministers as they lobby the government for cash.

They are asking for £3m of funding towards the project and say the venue is now 'in touching distance'.

It comes after Cornwall Council voted to pump £3m of public money into it, provided the government does the same.

The team behind the Stadium for Cornwall, including representatives from Truro and Penwith College, the Cornish Pirates, Truro City FC, West Cornwall MP Derek Thomas and Cornwall Council, said:

"Following the excellent news on Tuesday that Cornwall councillors have approved up to £3 million for the stadium, we now have a very clear understanding of the Government's position with regard to providing the funding to complete phase one of the project after meeting Matt Hancock, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport and Sports Minister Tracey Crouch in Westminster.

"The Secretary of State explained how Government money can be used to fund particular aspects of this community stadium for Cornwall and also made it clear that he would do what he could to ensure that we get across the line.

"In addition, the group and Cornwall Council have been offered the expertise of civil servants to maximise the opportunities of Government input and to help ensure that the full business case is completed on time; the Cornish MPs have also said that they will keep the Chancellor of the Exchequer fully informed on the progress of the project.

"The team was able to update the Government on the benefits the stadium will be able to provide in terms of opportunities for disabled sport and in providing outreach sports' programmes for schools throughout Cornwall.

"This is a fantastic project and we firmly believe that, with the work now going on with government, we will end up with the facility that people want - promoting health and wellbeing, providing economic benefits and offering top class sporting events at what will truly be a stadium for one and all.

"The stadium is now within touching distance after many years of hard work by a great number of people and the team pays tribute to them - without their efforts we would not have got to this exciting stage."
