A schoolgirl has been approached by a man, described by police as suspicious, near a play park in Plymouth.

Officers say the stranger came at the eight-year-old from behind, before putting a hand over her mouth and on her waist.

It happened in broad daylight as she was playing on the field by the park in Thurlestone Walk, Leigham.

Detectives say the girl managed to pull the man off before kicking him in the knee and screaming to her brothers for help.

Devon and Cornwall Police added that she was not injured, but was left very upset by what happened.

The force is urging anyone who saw something at around 6pm on Tuesday evening to come forward.

A spokesman said: "Police are appealing for witnesses after a man approached a young girl near a Plymouth play park on Tuesday evening.

"The eight-year-old girl was playing on the field by the play park in Thurlestone Walk, Leighham, around 6pm when the incident happened.

"She was approached from behind by a man who put one hand over her mouth and another around her waist.

"The girl managed to remove his arms before kicking him in the knee and screaming for help from her brothers who were nearby. She then ran off and returned home to tell her parents what had happened".

The spokesman added: "The girl was not injured but was left very upset by what happened. We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed this incident and can provide us with information about this man".

Before the incident the girl believes she saw the same man with a white van in the car park by Leigham Community Hall. The vehicle is described as a large white van with mud around the wheels.
