When Penzance's Jubilee Pool reopens for 2018

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 4:13pm 11th May 2018.

One of Cornwall's most iconic landmarks is set to re-open its doors for the summer season.

The art-deco Jubilee Pool in Penzance will welcome back swimmers later this month on 26th May, as they reveal a new community project.

Last summer saw the historic lido open for the longest season in 80 years and now baord members are gearing up for another busy season.

It comes as the Friends of Jubilee Pool launch a community share scheme, in a bid to raise money for improvement works and a geothermal project that will use renewable energy to heat a section of the pool.

A spokesperson said: "Work has already started on drilling a geothermal well which will provide enough renewable energy to heat a section of the water to 35 degrees.

"It is being drilled thanks to grants from the European Union, but a condition of that funding was that we need to fund the costs of connecting the well up to the pool, and build the section that will contain the heated water.

"We will also be building a new café facility and community space along the top terrace.

"We will raise some of this from loans and grant funding, but we also need to raise an anticipated £350,000 directly, so we're planning to do this by launching a community share offer."

Those interested will be able to find out more about the new scheme during the re-opening.

Gates will open from 10am until 6pm and visitors will also have the chance to swim for free on the day.

Jubilee Pool Café will also be open from 10am-8pm serving brunch, lunch, coffee, cakes and cocktails with Pizzas served from 5 - 8pm.

The pool, which suffered significant damage in the winter storms of 2014, has been an iconic and much loved feature of the Penzance seafront for over 80 years.

Following the damage the pool had been closed for two summer seasons, however, after an extensive repair project, which has included rock anchoring of the pool base, sea wall repairs, extensive grouting, mechanical and electrical works, as well as general repair works, the pool was reopened in summer 2016.
