Newquay hotel evacuated after early-hours fire

A hotel in Newquay has had to be evacuated after a huge fire.

Flames were seen streaming from the Atlantic Hotel in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Firefighters from the town called in back-up from Perranporth, St Columb, St Dennis and Truro.

Support vehicles from St Just and St Austell were also scrambled, along with police and paramedics.

The Atlantic says the fire broke  out in a balcony bedroom, describing it as an "incident concerning smoking".

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that everyone escaped unhurt and guests were moved to a nearby hotel.

Sonja said: "The alarm went off and first I thought it was the alarm on Brigette's phone.

"She went out into the corridor and all the guests told her it was the fire alarm so we put coats on and left".

Brigette said: "We had to wait for the fire and rescue service to come. We were taken to the pool room and then told we could go to the Headland Hotel for a coffee and to warm up".

Sonja said: "We can go back to the rooms now but I don't have such a good feeling going back to the room and staying another night".

Group Manager for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, Stewart Whitworth, said the initial call came through at around 3am.

"When our crews got here shortly after that, they saw the fire was also developing on the outside of the building so they requested four pumps to come to the job and also the aerial platform.

"That allowed us to hit the fire very, very hard and very quickly and we were able to extinguish it fairly swiftly".

He added: "It is one of Newquay's iconic hotels but I'm pleased to say when we arrived, the vast majority of residents had been evacuated successfully.

"There were two bedrooms which we were then able to search ourselves because they couldn't confirm whether there people in those two rooms, but we could quickly ascertain that they were both empty so we were able to get on top of the situation fairly swiftly because of the fire and also confident that all persons were accounted for".

Stewart added: "There's considerable fire damage to some of the bedrooms and a little bit of smoke damage but we'd be hopeful that the majority of the hotel would be able to get back to normal working fairly soon".

"We've got a fire investigation team on site and they're just doing some preliminary work to identify what the cause of the fire was".

A spokesperson from Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 03:04am on Sunday, a 999 call was received in the Critical Control Centre with reports of a fire in the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay. Hotel staff raised the alarm and had started to evacuate.

"Two major pumping appliances and the ariel ladder platform were mobilised on the initial call.

"The first appliance to leave Newquay Community Fire Station made 'Pumps 4' as flames could be seen coming from the hotel.

"Additional fire appliances and resources were mobilised from Perranporth, St Columb, St Dennis and an additional ariel ladder from Truro, along with the command support vehicle from St Just, the operational support vehicle from St Austell Community Fire Station and two supervisory officers.

"Firefighters used six breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, main jets and the ariel ladder platform to extinguish the fire by 05:14am.

"All persons have been accounted for and fire crews working jointly with police with help of hotel staff are relocating guests to a nearby hotel".

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service said an ambulance was also called for support and medical assistance, adding: "A full fire investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
