Newquay hotel thinks 'smoking incident' caused fire

A Newquay hotel has revealed what it thinks caused the fire that forced guests to evacuate.

Flames were seen streaming from the Atlantic in the early hours of Sunday morning.

At its height, crews from St Just to St Austell were battling the blaze.

In a Facebook post bosses confirmed it broke out in a balcony bedroom, describing it as an "incident concerning smoking".

John and Sheila Wilson were on asleep on the last night of a four-day break when the alarm went off.

John said: "Normally when a bell rings like that you think 'has it just happened' or - you don't think of a fire to be honest with up".

He also praised the night porter for getting everybody out: "He came up and he said 'you've got to get out quick' like".

Group Manager for Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service, Stewart Whitworth, said the initial call came through at around 3am.

"When our crews got here shortly after that, they saw the fire was also developing on the outside of the building so they requested four pumps to come to the job and also the aerial platform.

"That allowed us to hit the fire very, very hard and very quickly and we were able to extinguish it fairly swiftly".

He added: "It is one of Newquay's iconic hotels but I'm pleased to say when we arrived, the vast majority of residents had been evacuated successfully.

"There were two bedrooms which we were then able to search ourselves because they couldn't confirm whether there people in those two rooms, but we could quickly ascertain that they were both empty so we were able to get on top of the situation fairly swiftly because of the fire and also confident that all persons were accounted for".

In a statement on Facebook, the Atlantic Hotel said: "We can confirm that there has been a small fire at 3.00am this morning at the Atlantic Hotel in Newquay which was contained in a balcony room due to an incident concerning smoking. We have a strict non-smoking policy in place throughout the hotel.

It continued: "The hotel re-opened for breakfast from 7.30am this morning, and guests returned to enjoy a full English Breakfast.

"We would like to give special thanks to our staff and Cornwall fire and Rescue Services.

"We would like to confirm that we are open for business, with all facilities open.

Stewart Whitworth added: "There's considerable fire damage to some of the bedrooms and a little bit of smoke damage but we'd be hopeful that the majority of the hotel would be able to get back to normal working fairly soon".

"We've got a fire investigation team on site and they're just doing some preliminary work to identify what the cause of the fire was".
