Jubilee Pool in Penzance reopens its doors for the summer season with a free day of bathing.

Yep, you read that right!

Everyone will be able to swim free of charge on Saturday 26th May.

Events are being laid on all day, including a special seaside visitor!

Last summer saw the historic lido open for the longest season in 80 years and now board members are gearing up for another busy summer.

It comes as the Community Benefit Society, who now operate the pool as Jubilee Pool Penzance Ltd, launch a community share scheme to raise money for improvement works and a project that will use geothermal energy to heat part of the pool.

Work has already started on drilling a geothermal well which will provide enough renewable energy to heat a section of the water to 35°C.

It is all thanks to grants from the European Union but a condition of that funding was that Jubilee Pool has to fund the costs of connecting the well up to the pool and build the section that will contain the heated water.

There are also plans to build a new café facility and community space along the top terrace.

Until now, Jubilee Pool has opened for the summer season from May to September but bosses say this will allow the pool to be enjoyed by everyone, all-year-round.

Susan Stuart, one of the directors, said: "The money will be raised partly from loans and grant funding, but an anticipated £350,000 will be raised directly from the general public, so we're planning to do this by launching a community share offer.

"We can't deliver this project without the community's help, and we hope everyone will consider investing in our scheme, whether it's just one share or 10,000, together we can all share in the pool's exciting future."

Bosses say as a listed building in a seaside location Jubilee Pool will always require ongoing investment, but they say the pool is capable of becoming less reliant on public funding.

With 40,000 visitors last summer, they describe it as an already 'successful visitor attraction' with or without geothermal.

However, once it becomes an all-year-round attraction, they believe it will pay for itself.

Martin Nixon, fellow director said: "Opening day is very popular as it heralds the start of summer and we're expecting lots of interest in our plans for the future.

"Jubilee Pool is now widely considered to be the best example of a pre-war Lido, not only in the UK but the world.

"It's a remarkable building providing safe seawater bathing for all ages; it's an unique modernist lido of national architectural importance; a tourist attraction in its own right; and now, it's set to provide a catalyst for the future economic regeneration of our town.

"We value the community's support in our work to date in saving the pool for future generations to enjoy, but now more than ever we need them to help us achieve our longer term goals".

Jubilee Pool opening 2016

What is on the cards this weekend?

On Saturday 26th July, the Jubilee Pool will throw open its gates from 10.30am until 6pm.

The café will be open between 10am and 8pm serving brunch, lunch, coffee, cakes and cocktails, and pizzas from 5pm - 8pm.

The pool, which suffered significant damage in the winter storms of 2014, has been an iconic and much loved feature of the Penzance seafront for over 80 years.

The lido was closed for two summer seasons in the wake of the storms but after an extensive repair project, which has included rock anchoring of the pool base, sea wall repairs, extensive grouting, mechanical and electrical works and general repair works, it reopened in summer 2016.
